Luke Ma

Luke originally hails like an iceball with alarming alacrity from Shanghai, China. Unsatisfied with the the left over legacy of Chair(wo)man Mao, Luke came to the United States when he was a wee lad of 9. He started as a good little Asian nerd and studied math and science and played the piano as all good Asian nerds should. Halfway through his undergraduate career at Brown University, however, Luke decided to destroy his financial future (though securing his spirititual and academic future) by switch from a double major in Math and Computer Science to a double major in Music and Computer Science. Leaving the lucrative tech sector behind, he started to pursue academic music with a frightening lack of direction. Having eventually settled upon music theory, Luke applied to a number of graduates school and decided on University of California, Santa Barbara, groaning all the way about the horrible weather here.

2003-2004 is Luke's first academic year at UCSB and once again he has no idea what he is doing. Having had James Baker as his advisor at Brown, Luke is prone to a bit of Schenkerian analysis at opportune moments. He has also been known to have studied John Adams and more recently "loads" of Gyorgy Ligeti. Though he wants to say that he will eventually study "Triadic Superimpositions in post-tonal diatonic repertoire in of 20th century composers", he doesn't really know what that means so he'll have to settle for "stuff" until such time as he figures out what he's really doing.

Luke's resume will be here eventually.
