James Vincent Maiello
A native of Poughkeepsie, NY, James Maiello is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in musicology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His primary advisors are Alejandro Planchart and William Prizer in the Music department; he is also working with Carol Lansing and Edward English in the History department. He is also active in the Medieval Studies Program at UCSB.
James received a B.M. in Music Education from S.U.N.Y. College at Fredonia in 2000. He completed a master's degree in Music History at Bowling Green State University in 2002 under the guidance of Vincent Corrigan, Carol Hess, and Mary Natvig. His thesis was titled "Asperges me and Vidi aquam: A Study of the Antiphons and their Polyphonic Settings, c. 1400 - c. 1600."
James's research interests are in medieval liturgical music, music in Weimar and Nazi Germany, and in the pedagogy of music appreciation/music history courses. His dissertation will focus on music in 11th and 12th century Pistoia, specifically MSS C.119, C.120, and C.121 of the Biblioteca capitolare in that city.
James has recently presented papers at the UCSB Medieval Studies Graduate Conference and at the Annual Joint Meeting of the AMS's Northern California and Pacific Southwest Chapters. He will also present this summer at the Royal Music Association's Medieval-Renaissance Conference at the University of Glasgow.
